Abstract

The switching elements that are used in switching networks generally cannot tolerate faults. In this paper we propose a fault-tolerant 2*2 switching element called FTSE. An FTSE consists of an interconnection of four ordinary 2*2 switching elements which are controlled by the same control (tag) bit. In the presence of a faulty switching element, the FTSE automatically reconfigures itself and performs the desired functionality. The reliability of FTSEs is higher than that of ordinary switching elements.
