Abstract

Two STATUE BASES FROM THE EXCAVATIONS in the Athenian Agora cite members of a family of Marathon of the first century before Christ which used the names Zenon and Pammenes regularly.1 Previous attempts to sketch the stemma of the family have not been completely satisfactory. J. Sundwall2 in his basic study confused the various branches of the family. A number of more recent works by A. Wilhelm, B. D. Meritt, and J. H. Oliver3 have added new material or re-edited or improved the texts which are already known. Although the family fills the criteria described by Christian Habicht (178-179) for membership among Fiihrende Familien, its growth to elite status and its rise through lesser elites into the governing elite4 can be documented.
