Abstract

The chivalric romance of the 11 th to the 13 th century in Western Europe is discussed in this article in order to understand the influence of that genre on the formation of the nobleman’s ideal. First of all it was necessary to provide a general characterization of the forms and motivations the authors used to exalt the figure of the knight through the glorification of heroism and love. The analysis was based on the following works: Lancelot, the cart knight and Yvain, the lion’s knight by Chretien de Troyes, and Chanson de Roland , an epic poem by an unknown author.
