Abstract
Modulation sidebands are effective diagnosis indicators for detecting localized gear faults. In a planetary gear set, multiple vibration sources and transferring transmission path increase the complexity of characteristics of modulation sidebands. This study aims to model the vibration signals of a planetary gear set and investigate the features of modulation sidebands in the healthy condition and localized damage condition. A dynamic model is proposed to simulate the vibration signals. The time-varying mesh stiffness is expressed by Fourier series and the transferring transmission path is represented by a Hanning window function. By incorporating the effects of the time-varying mesh stiffness and the transmission path, the vibration signals are obtained. Finally, the properties of the modulation sidebands of a planetary gear with localized planet faults are investigated in the numerical simulation.
