Abstract

An on-board processor makes efficient use of the channel capacities of a satellite communications system employing multibeam technology. The Advanced Space Communications Research Laboratory has been developing an on-board processor for a multibeam mobile satellite communications system. In a multibeam communications system, the dynamic channel assignment strategy provides high efficiency. This paper evaluates, using computer simulation, the dynamic channel assignment strategy, which makes the on-board processor compact and decreases the signal processing period, and compares the performance of this channel assignment strategy with that of the conventional hybrid channel assignment strategy. The simulation results show the frequency bandwidth required for signal processing in the proposed strategy is from 10% to 20% narrower than that in the conventional hybrid channel assignment strategy.
