Abstract

A dual circularly polarized (CP) planar Luneberg lens antenna for mm-wave wireless communication is presented. Fed by a dual linearly polarized patch antenna, this planar lunneberg lens antenna is based on dielectric slab waveguide (DSW). The circularly polarized radiation is achieved by exciting TM0 and TE0 modes with 90° phase difference in DSW. The desired refractive index of luneberg lens antenna is obtained by shaping the surface of dielectric slab. The dual-CP planner lens antenna is based on polystyrene (e r =2.54, tan δ=0.0005). The optimized dual-CP planar luneberg lens antenna, 19.4λ diameter and 0.5λ total height, achieves 18.7 dBi simulated gain, 4.2° and 60.2° half-power beamwidth for the horizontal plane and the vertical plane at 30 GHz. The Simulated results present the axial ration below 3 dB at the main beam direction is from 29.6GHz to 30.45GHz, showing good antenna performance.
