Abstract

Purpose: Immediately after needle placement for transrectal ultrasound-guided permanent prostate brachytherapy, significant prostate swelling (i.e., edema) occurs. This surgical trauma may be minimized by using smaller diameter needles. To evaluate this, a new 125I source (model 9011) has been designed with a smaller diameter and subsequently 57% smaller cross-sectional area. The purpose of this study is to determine the brachytherapy dosimetry parameters needed for treatment planning preceding clinical implementation, and to compare to the model 6711 125I source.
