Abstract
The potential function G 0 , and the new phase rule recently proposed to deal with thermodynamic equilibrium in open rock systems are critically reviewed. The conclusions are drawn that the function G 0 contributes nothing fundamental to the treatment of open systems in petrology. The new phase rule and the related concept of perfectly mobile components are not applicable to metasomatic zoning, and the new phase rule is an undesirable statement of the Gibbs phase rule which presents temptation for misinterpretation of the nature and limitations of the phase rule in petrologic analysis.
