Abstract
Product substitution is a common dilemma in healthcare settings as products become unavailable due to supply chain shortages or other factors. Substitute products can pose risks to patient safety when not carefully selected. This study developed a human factors-based heuristic evaluation tool to help healthcare professionals make informed decisions when choosing substitute products. The heuristic evaluation tool was developed through a design sprint that involved human factors experts and healthcare practitioners. Stakeholder evaluation led to improvements in heuristic evaluation categories. The final proposed tool evaluated products across five categories: product safety, usability, use, storage and maintenance, organizational support, and cost.
