Abstract
In the ITER TF Coils reference design the circular conductor is enclosed in the grooves of a stainless steel plate, the so called radial plate. In this paper, we present an alternative solution using a relatively thin walled rectangular conductor without an additional reinforcing structure. We describe the conductor and the layout of the winding pack and analyze the magnetic, thermo-hy-draulic and mechanical behavior of the proposed coil. Then a cost analysis is carried out to estimate the significant saving that can be achieved by the proposed solution.
