Abstract
The use of toys made from high-temperature superconductors in demonstrations of magnetic levitation and the linear Meissner effect is discussed. The construction of some small toys and a magnetic rail that allows students to magnetically levitate a toy train which can be made to follow a roller-coaster-like track are described. The magnetic rails may include straight lines, curves, spirals, and Y junctions. The toys are launched by letting them float down a small incline and smoothly along the rails. The approach provides an interesting way for students to learn about superconductors and magnetic levitation. An extension of this approach could provide a basis for serious calculations of lifting power, drag, etc. >
