Abstract
This paper addresses some aspects of the problem of detecting and localizing damage in nonlinear structures using changes in modal parameters. The subject is important because the majority of structures exhibit some degree of material or geometric nonlinearity, depending upon the magnitude of the excitation and loading. Previous works have detected and localized damage in structures either via solutions of sensitivity equations in the time or frequency domain [1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[6],[7], or via the use of some form of indicator function [8],[9],[10]. Not only have the methods been applied almost exclusively to linear structures, the extent to which the methods are applicable to nonlinear or time-variant structures has not been rigorously investigated.
