Abstract

Freedom of speech in cyberspace is an important topic in professionalism, ethics, or social impact courses for majors in Information Systems, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering. Students often are not familiar with the complexities of this subject, and have not carefully considered their commitment to principles of free speech. This paper outlines a suite of case studies that are useful in teaching about freedom of speech in cyberspace. Particular attention is paid to illustrating the boundaries of free speech and the ways in which free speech might be different in cyberspace. Supporting materials for the module include powerpoint notes, suggested videos, and worksheets.
