Abstract
ABSTRACT Meaning and purpose in life (MPL) is an important domain of the recovery capital model. Yet, this important recovery support mechanism has received scant attention, particularly in relation to older individuals recovering from alcohol use disorder (AUD)/problem drinking. Framed within Viktor Frankl’s theory of meaning, the study used two measures, the Purpose in Life Test and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, to collect the data of 381 older individuals (≥50-years old) in recovery. The data was analyzed against four independent variables: onset age of problem drinking (early- and late-onset), gender, continuous years in recovery and recovery pathways. The study found a significant relationship between MPL and continuous years in recovery, suggesting that as the length of time in recovery increases, so too, do levels of MPL.
