Abstract

An examination of the literature relating to air oxidation of aqueous sulphide solution, supported by experimental data, leads to the conclusion that the Tuccillo-Nielsen wheel is not a suitable basis for tarnish testing of dental gold alloys. An alternative method based on anaerobic potentiostatic testing, whereby a sample is potentiostatically maintained in a sulphide solution in absence of air, is suggested.
