Abstract

Pharmaceutical waste has become a serious problem in the world, due to high demand of drugs and large expansion of pharmaceutical industries. Antibiotics are one of the major water pollutants in various medicinal wastes and their excessive concentration generate antibiotic resistance bacteria and causes major health risk. Various techniques have been used to eliminate antibiotic contaminations from water, but ceria-based nano photocatalyst and nano adsorbents have attracted much attention for their removal due to its low toxicity, low cost and high oxygen storage capability. CeO2 is an n-type semiconductor with a wide band gap range from 2.6 to 3.2 eV, therefore has been used as a supporting photocatalyst in various heterostructure semiconductors. In this review article, we discussed the factors that reduce the wide band gap of CeO2 and make them suitable for visible light assisted photo catalysts. Therefore, the main purpose of this review is to present an overview of antibiotic classification, their mechanisms of action and to describe the methods for the removal of antibiotics using metal and non-metal doped ceria nano adsorbents, ceria-based heterostructures and ceria assisted photo Fenton heterostructures. Furthermore, the future perspectives and challenges that arise during preparation, handling and separation of ceria-based heterostructures are briefly discussed.
