Abstract

Every year of my teaching career I have found myself slightly surprised at the limited knowledge children have of the Nativity story, the fact that many remain uncertain after performing some kind of play loosely based on it for a number of years has led me to question the way in which I have been teaching it. In an attempt to make the children familiar with the story and also help them begin to understand the significance of the story to Christians I have created a unit of work that builds on their knowledge and experiences of Christmas and celebration at a personal level before challenging their thinking with some creative teaching.
