Abstract
A cosmologically acceptable harmless hadronic axion is generated in a superstring-inspired model with an intermediate mass scale, through the heavy-quark mechanism. The heavy quarks required to implement this scheme are naturally identified with the exoticD fields contained in the fundamental representations of the gauge groupE6. The axion couplings with ordinary matter are discussed.
