Abstract
Este artigo tem como objetivo refletir acerca das contribuições do pesquisador inglês George Newport (1803-1854) para a elucidação de uma questão amplamente investigada entre os séculos XVII e XIX: o papel dos componentes do sêmen masculino na reprodução. Após apresentação de algumas informações de sua biografia científica, serão discutidos aspectos de sua obra “On the Impregnation of the Ovum in the Amphibia” (1851). Será dada ênfase à análise dos experimentos realizados para investigar o papel preciso dos espermatozoides e do líquido seminal na fecundação de ovócitos, indicando a consciência do autor sobre a contribuição do seu estudo para o conhecimento sobre a reprodução animal.
