Abstract

A constant tension winch controller has been designed to minimize peak tension loads encountered while towing heavy gear in rough sea conditions. The control unit consists of a pressure relief valve inserted in the hydraulic circuit of the winch. Operational tests with a towed plankton net system showed significant reduction in the cable tension peaks and marked improvement in the towed system behaviour.
