Abstract

The contribution refers to permanent magnet synchronous spindle motor drives in the speed range between 10,000 and 25,000 rpm and in the power range between 20 and 60 kW. Three different solutions have been analyzed from the converter structure point of view: the Six-Step Current Source Inverter (CSI), the Six-Step Voltage Source Inverter (VSI-2c) (two phases-on, current supply type) and the Six-Step Voltage Source Inverter (VSI-2v) (two phases-on, voltage supply type). The third one has been selected as the test case. The authors present a method to optimize the drive output performance in terms of output power and capability curves. A non conventional load test bench has been set up to test overall system at the rated speed and the rated torque.
