Abstract

An English educational program which aims to provide more realistic language practice than that provided by most such programs has been developed using HyperCard. It answers or generates questions, and checks users’ answers. The types of questions handled are yes I no (including tag), either/or (including ...or not?), who, when, where, and what. The vocabulary used by the program is editable under the headings: Verbs, Objects, Names, Relatives, Places, Times, and Adjectives. Simulated speech is optional. The program was written with Japanese learners in mind, so its tutorial section and parts of the interface are in Japanese for greater user‐friendliness. Other versions can, of course, be produced easily. In general it works well in producing realistic English, though potential problems should be considered when editing the vocabulary items.
