Abstract
When developing a laser training program for new staff in the hospital, there are steps to follow that will insure the program achieves success, not only for the personnel involved, but more importantly, for the patient. Preliminary planning is necessary where the staff needs are assessed, the learning approach established and goals and objectives developed. Proper training will insure proper patient care, prevent accidents, compliance with policies and procedures, properly maintain equipment, and maintain the comfort level of the staff to keep their interest for laser involvement. the program should be designed with the adult learner in mind where specific characteristics are noted. When implementing the program, the preceptors presenting the instruction play a key role in evaluation and feedback. The program is composed of didactic and hands-on lab training, where the participants are evaluated during the learning process to insure maximum benefits are achieved. Follow-up on an individual basis allows specific problems to be addressed as they occur. A variety of learning modalities should be available for the person who needs additional time to absorb the material. The training does not stop with the initial orientation process but continues as long as the personnel are working with new lasers or different specialties where lasers are utilized. An ongoing education process should be part of every laser program where review and recertification is provided every six months or annually. When the criteria for a competency-based education program is met, the standard of quality patient care desired will be achieved and properly trained personnel will insure the safety needed to make this program successful. When developing a laser training program for new staff in the hospital, there are steps to follow that will insure the program achieves success, not only for the personnel involved, but more importantly, for the patient.
