Abstract

This paper is an attempt to survey different types of microstrip patch antenna based on metamaterial reported in various journals and conference proceedings. Compact microstrip patch antennas with high gain and directivity with multiband functionality are utilized in digital communication due to their cost-effective terms and simple manufacturing process. The metamaterials can be used for miniaturization, high gain and directivity microstrip patch antennas. The metamaterials allow to curtail the geometric size with antenna gain and directivity enhancement and also expand the operating frequency band due to unusual electromagnetic properties of metamaterials. This survey paper presents various microstrip patch antennas based on metamaterials. Comparative analysis of all these metamaterial-inspired microstrip patch antennas is also included. This survey material is intended to act as reference material for designers of microstrip patch antenna to choose the technology based on the requirement of gain, directivity, bandwidth, and antenna size.
