Abstract

In this work, a comprehensive model has been developed for the drying of the glassy polymeric coatings by studying the evaporation of thin films of poly(styrene)/p-xylene solutions. The developed model considers not only Fickian diffusion at the high solvent concentration region but also a visco-elastic contribution to diffusion at the late stages of drying. The model predictions for the drying rate and the p-xylene concentration profiles were found to be in satisfactory agreement with the available measurements. The assumptions made in the model development were further justified by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). It is believed that this work could be used to further investigate the drying of glassy coatings.
