Abstract

FOREWORD ABOUT two years ago, we prepared a compilation of the available kinetic data on the reactivities of the primary species of radiolysis in aqueous solution. * The compilation covered hydrated electrons, hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl radicals, and was invaluable to us in our attempt to systematize the information on the kinetic behavior of these species. Since the completion of the compilation in September 1964, there has been an unforeseen rapid development in the quantitative evaluation of free radical reactions in aqueous solutions. This outstanding development has rendered our original compilation partly out of date and called for a thorough revision. t The specific rate constants of reactions of hydrated electrons, which were the first radiolytic species to undergo a systematic kinetic study, have been determined for over 600 compounds. Most of the newer values were obtained by pulse radiolysis, and as this method is much more direct and accurate than the methods of competition kinetics, we have excluded from the present compilation older data based on the latter technique. We have also
