Abstract
1. 1. Lipoprotein lipase activity was extracted from heart and adipose tissues of 16-day-old embryos and 8-week-old chickens. 2. 2. pH optima of enzyme extracts from all tissues were similar, lying within the range 8.3–8.8. 3. 3. Activation energies, determined over the temperature range 12–30° C.,were 11.2 and II.3 Cal. for embryonic adipose and heart tissues and 12.4 and 12.6 Cal. for postembryonic adipose and heart tissues respectively. 4. 4. Enzyme activity from different tissues was similarly inhibited by sodium chloride, protamine sulphate, and ammonium sulphate. 5. 5. Heparin inhibited soluble enzyme activity, but had little effect upon whole extracts from tissues. 6. 6. These studies suggest that the lipoprotein lipases in adipose and heart tissues of embryos and 8-week-old birds are identical or closely related.
