Abstract
Abstract We compared two techniques (a 50 × 50 cm box-type sampler [Gerking device] vs. a combination of a quadrat of the same size and a 5 cm diameter water column sampler) for sampling epiphytic and nektonic invertebrates in four playas dominated by moist-soil plants during August 1994. Estimates of aquatic invertebrate biomasses and numbers derived from a combination of the quadrat and water-column sampler were generally higher (P 0.05) between the two methods. Collection time for samples was less (P < 0.05) with the quadrat and column sampler method. The combination of a quadrat and a water column sampler appeared to be the better method for sampling aquatic invertebrates in playas dominated by annual emergent vegetation.
