Abstract

FOD (foreign object debris) on airport runways is dangerous for taking off and landing aircraft on runways. It is critical to detect foreign objects and debris accurately to assure the safety of aircraft. FOD is a phrase that refers to any small particle, debris, or fragments that may cause damage or damage to aircraft passing by. This paper compares both manual and automotive methods for detecting and identifying debris on airport runways based on visual petrol, and 24/7 inspection. The manual method includes FOD containers, manual sweepers, magnetic bars, etc. and technologies in the automotive method include millimeter-wave radar, LiDAR technology, multi-robot System, etc. In addition, industry-leading technologies have also been discussed such as QinetiQ's Tarsier Raider, Trax Aviation Technology's XF and XM detection systems, Xsight's, RunWize, and iFerret systems.
