Abstract

Summary Analysis of total lipids from eggs of hens housed under battery, free-range and deep litter systems has shown that seasonal variation in E.F.A. content is greater than variation caused by the method of husbandry. Histological examination and fatty-acid analysis revealed no difference between the aortae of day-old chicks from freerange and battery hens. These results do not support the hypothesis of Sinclair 2 that battery hens' eggs are different from free-range hens' eggs either in their E.F.A. content or in their relation to the development of aortic sudanophilia in the chick.
