Abstract

A comparative study of the most probable number and the hydrophobic grid membrane filter methods for the recovery of total coliforms in foods was carried out by five Health Protection Branch laboratories. A total of 47 samples of food, consisting of 172 sample units, was analyzed by the two methods. The study shows that in general the methods are not significantly different, but that in some situations the hydrophobic grid membrane filter method yields higher coliform counts in foods.
