Abstract

This paper presents an ultrawideband (UWB) planar patch antenna covering a wide frequency range that can perform in UWB, X, and Ku bands. The ultrawideband frequency range is achieved by using defected ground structure (DGS) technique. The compact volume of presented antenna is 32×32×1.6 mm3, designed using a cost-effective FR-4 substrate. The measured impedance bandwidth is observed from 3.02 GHz to 19.82 GHz. The Antenna's impedance bandwidth is enhanced by using a half-plane semicircular-shaped ground structure. The percentage impedance bandwidth of antenna is 146.2%. The antenna's peak gain is found to be in the range of 2 dB to 6.8 dB throughout the operational frequency range. The proposed antenna radiates with more than 85% of radiation efficiency within the range of operational frequency. The antenna parameters are optimized by using appropriate design techniques. The measured results are found to be in concurrence with the simulated one.
