Abstract

A proximity feed ultra-wide band (UWB) patch antennas with a compact size (millimetres size) for Ku/K band applications is presented. Defected ground structure (DGS) technique is employed to enlarge the bandwidth of the antenna. The proposed antenna introduces UWB performance in the frequency range of 16 GHz to 29 GHz with a compact size of 7 × 10 mm2, which is suitable for many applications. The analysis and design of the proposed antenna are investigated with the commercially available software CST microwave studio (MWS) simulator. The proposed design is fabricated and tested. The measured data of the fabricated antenna demonstrates a very good agreement with the simulated results. The proposed antenna shows omnidirectional radiation pattern with an average gain of 3.5 dBi and good radiation efficiency over the operating band.
