Abstract

An inexpensive linear accelerator for electrons was built and is now in operation. The acceleration is accomplished by an electrodynamical space-charge effect in a cylindrical electron beam. The 2.5 m long instrument, operated with a 20 keV, 350 mA beam, produces electrons of energies up to 14 MeV. Design and operational characteristics are presented along with the results of performance tests.
