Abstract

Petroff and De Kock used transmission electron microscopy to examine swirl defects in dislocation-free silicon crystals. They found that the defects were interstitial loops, vacancy loops, and precipitate particles. The presence of interstitial loops led them to suggest that hot silicon crystals contain a high concentration of silicon self-interstitials. We show that this conclusion is unproved and improbable.
