Abstract
What is striking about Harry Braverman's Labor and Monopoly Capital (Monthly Review Press, 1974) is its thorough rejection of technological determinism. Braverman's insistence that the relations of production have shaped productive technique—not just vice-versa—and his detailed exposition of that theme serve to underline the essence of Marx's historical materialism: the interaction between the superstructure and the base.
