Abstract

What is striking about Harry Braverman's Labor and Monopoly Capital (Monthly Review Press, 1974) is its thorough rejection of technological determinism. Braverman's insistence that the relations of production have shaped productive technique—not just vice-versa—and his detailed exposition of that theme serve to underline the essence of Marx's historical materialism: the interaction between the superstructure and the base. Yet despite Braverman's clarity, David Gordon, in his "Capitalist Efficiency and Socialist Efficiency" (MR, July-August, 1976) misses Braverman's (Marx's) methodological implications. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
