Abstract

The use of negative pi mesons as a radiation treatment modality for cancer requires the implementation of computerized three-dimensional treatment planning. This is primarily because of the need to correct for range shifting due to inhomogeneities. It is also essential for the delivery of high LET radiation to irregularly shaped volumes. The computer code described was written in a modular format for easy revision and modification. This allows the code to be adapted to other types of radiation with the use of an appropriate beam model. Contour and density information is entered in successive parallel planes. Provisions are incorporated for coordinate transformation and input of magnified data. Absorbed dose is calculated for a three-dimensional matrix of cells with the high and low LET components weighted with an appropriate RBE. Output for any plane in the volume can be selected. The code is presently implemented on a CDC 7600 but will be converted for interactive treatment planning on a PDP 11/45.
