Abstract
ABSTRACT The impact of oil on coastal marshlands can adversely affect coastline stability and the well-being of marine ecology in general. It can lead to the destruction of salt marsh flora and animal communities and destabilize the important energy-absorbing buffer zones that prevent erosion. This ecological disruption can translate into milions of dollars of loss in coastal zone properties and in income from the commercially important fishing industry. Marshland rebuilding with transplanted specific halophytes after oil pollution incidents may help retain delicate but important coastal habitat.
