Abstract

Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to show a new technique for constructing a class of q-nary type B1 codes by combining any number of q-nary type B1 codes which are constructed by Hsu's method (Hsu 1969 a, b). If there are x distinct q-nary type B1 codes, each is of rate (k − 1)/k, then the x type B1 codes can be combined to give a rate (xk − 1 )/xk type B1 recurrent codes. The use of the q-nary type B1 codes is very simple. If q = 2 f , then the q-nary type B1codes presented can be used for binary burst-error correction. When the q-nary type B1codes are used for binary burst-error correction, a detailed discussion about implementation will be given. A comparison with the two classes of Iwadare's type B1codes (Iwadare 1968) has also been made. The advantage of the q-nary type B1codes presented is high-speed implementation.
