Abstract
Abstract A chirally invariant theory of nucleon and delta is developed in which confinement is imposed by means of a Dirac potential. The baryons are represented by symmetric SU(4) wave functions. The non-linear pion-quark coupling is treated exactly to second order and approximately in higher order. It is found that, in addition to the usual scalar potential, a significant vector potential is necessary to describe the static properties of nucleon and delta satisfactorily.
