Abstract

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system while Sjogren’s syn drome is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease. Co-existing NMO and Sjogren’s syndrome was reported as a rare asso ciation in the literature. We report a case of a middle-age Chinese woman presented with unilateral optic neuritis who was subsequently diagnosed with seropositive NMO and Sjogren’s syndrome with seropositivity for NMO-IgG and anti-Ro (SSA) antibodies respectively. Work up for other autoimmune disorders was negative. She was prescribed with oral azathioprine daily with no further attack of optic neuritis and longitudinal myelitis for 3 years. In view of high risk of relapse and signifi cant morbidity in most cases with NMO, rapid diagnosis and early initiation of aggressive immunosuppressive treatment are essential to minimize unfavorable outcomes.
