Abstract

ABSTRACT This article discusses aspects of Antjie Krog's translation project and focuses particularly on Krog's translation of her own poetry into English in Down to my last skin (2000). The translation project is approached by way of her own depiction of it in terms of the emblem of the sole, as indicated in the title and cover illustration of her work A change of tongue (2003). Sociopolitical aspects are discussed and illustrated by means of extracts from her poems in Afrikaans and/or in English translations. Lastly, there is an assessment of a number of translations of her poems by Krog, largely using criteria derived from Krog's own poetic theory and practice, as manifested in extracts from her poetry and prose writing.
