Abstract

The Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) used for back light sources of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) require high voltage greater than 1000 V to be turned on. A conventional CCFL driver uses wound wire transformers to supply the high voltage. But the transformer keeps supplying the high voltage when the CCFL requires lower voltage. In this paper, the author proposes an inverter using a Ceramic Transformer (CTR) instead of the ordinary transformer. The lamp voltage is controlled using a V-F converter through the frequency characteristic of the CTR from turn on to usual operating voltage. The prototype CTR inverter using a conventional type CTR achieved better than 70—80% efficiency in 2 to 3 watts' systems
