(A Case Study of Marital Conflict Process by Financial Issues)

Abstract

Korean Abstract: 재무적 문제는 지속적으로 이혼사유의 상위권을 차지할 정도로 부부 갈등의 중요한 원인이며 어떤 가정에서나 보편적으로 발생할 수 있는 문제로서 보다 구체적으로 다루어질 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 재무적 문제로 인해 발생하는 부부갈등의 진행과정을 살펴보고, 그 과정에서 갈등의 심화 요인과 억제 요인은 무엇인지 밝혀내고자 하였다. 이를 위해 부부갈등을 경험하고 있는 성인 11인을 대상으로 개별심층면접과 집단심층면접을 통해 수집한 데이터를 바탕으로 사례분석을 수행하였다. 분석결과, 재무적 문제로 인한 부부갈등의 과정은 ‘갈등발생’, ‘갈등심화’, ‘해결노력’, ‘갈등결과’의 구조로 이루어진 것을 알 수 있었으며, 해결노력의 실패는 갈등심화로의 역행을 유발하여 악순환을 만들어내고 있었다. 한편, 해결노력의 긍정적 결과인 갈등 감소에 기여하는 촉진요인은 ‘대화의 기술’인 것으로 나타났으며 이혼과 같은 부정적 결과로의 이행을 막는 억제요인은 ‘자녀의 존재’로 나타났다. 이상의 결과를 통해 재무적 어려움을 극복하기 위해 부부갈등을 다루고 역기능적 행동 및 관계를 개선할 수 있는 재무치료의 관점이 도입될 필요성이 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 예방적 차원에서 재무관리교육에 상호 이해와 신뢰를 도모할 수 있는 대화 기술에 대한 교육이 동반된다면 보다 효과적인 교육이 이루어질 수 있을 것이다. English Abstract: Financial issues are a major cause of marital conflicts and a dominate reason for divorce. In particular, financial issues need to be dealt with more specifically as problems that can occur in any home, not a home with distinct characteristics such as a difference in personality or personal characteristics. This study aimed to investigate the process through which the conflicts arising from financial issues proceed, and to identify the factors of aggravation and inhibition of conflict in the process. The subject of this study were adults who were experiencing marital conflicts. Data were collected from 11 interviews. The analysis results revealed that the marital conflicts process consists of conflicts occurrence, conflicts aggravation, resolving efforts, and outcomes of conflicts. The failure of the resolving efforts led via a vicious cycle back to a conflicts aggravation stage. The conversational skill was the stimulus to positive outcomes that reduced the conflict. On the other hand, children’s existence inhibited marital conflict, with divorce no even being consider after marital conflict. These results imply that solving marital conflicts caused by financial issues requires solving financial and emotional issues together like financial therapy.
