Abstract
A 58-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray, film, which was pointed out at a medical checkup, though she had no complaint. CT scan revealed a tumor corresponding to fat CT value at the anterior mediastinal region, and an operation was performed under a diagnosis of mediastinal lipoma. The resected specimen weighed 340g without surrounding infiltration. Pathological examination showed that the tumor was thymic lipoma. Thirty-six cases of thymic lipoma have been reported in Japan so far. There were 13 males and 23 female, with an averaged age of 36.6 years. This disease was often asymptomatic and commonly detected at medical checkup. Five patients were complicated by Myasthenia gravis. In the diagnosis of this disease CT scan is useful. Recently this disease has been increasingly seen in the literature and been considered not so rare as before. A recent widespread use of CT may contribute to this tendency.
