Abstract
A case of splenic abscess, an extremely rare condition, is reported with a review of the literature. The patient, a 71-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaints of fever and chills. There was no abdominal pain or tenderness. Soon after admission antibiotics were given, but fever did not subside. Two days after admission ultrasonography was done to detect abscess of the abdominal cavity. Ultrasonography revealed multiple hypoechoic areas in the spleen, but not in the liver, resulting in a diagnosis of splenic abscess. On the 8th day after admission splenectomy was carried out and antibiotics were given. The postoperative course was smooth and the patient discharged with no abdominal symptons.
