Abstract

A 7-year-old girl visited another hospital because of abdominal pain in the upper right abdomen. A soft mass with the size of 5cm in diameter was palpated under the right costal margin. She was transferred to the hospital and admitted. CT scan demonstrated that the mass was consisted with homogenous low density area and was well defined without the sign of tumor invasion. Preoperative diagnosis was made as mature lipoma at the retroperitoneal cavity. The tumor was removed easily because it had thin capsule and diagnosed as mature lipoma pathologically. There have been five pediatric cases of retroperitoneal lipoma in the Japanese literature so far. Preoperatively the retroperitoneal lipoma can easily be diagnosed and the tumor can be extirpated without difficulty. We would emphasize the importance of preoperative imaging diagnosis and postoperative pathological study in dealing with the disease.
