Abstract

Aims/Background: Black oesophagus (acute oesophageal necrosis syndrome) is a rare condition characterised by diffuse black discolouration of the oesophageal mucosa that stops abruptly at the gastro-oesophageal junction. Only two previous cases have been reported in the pathology literature. Hypoperfusion, impaired local defense barriers and reflux of gastric contents are thought to play a role in the evolution of this condition. Methods We report a case of black oesophagus and briefly review the literature. Results/Findings A 68-year-old woman died 1 day after surgical intervention for small bowel obstruction. Autopsy revealed black oesophagus. Also of note was atherosclerotic and hypertensive ar-teriopathy. We report our findings with emphasis on morphology. Discussion Both surgical and forensic pathologists should be aware of this rare, but distinct condition.
