Abstract

High production levels, efficient strata control and safe working conditions are affected by the reliability of lemniscate linkage powered supports. Determination of support performance requires in situ monitoring; in turn, this enables problems to be highlighted, allows further development of the product and leads to greater reliability. The application of lemniscate linkage supports in seam sections from 0.8 m to 4.0 m has proved that, with regard to productivity, safety and reliability, their cost can be justified in terms of overall efficiency. A combination of sophisticated instrumentation systems has been used to evaluate the behaviour of lemniscate linkage supports and surrounding strata at thin and thick seam longwall coalfaces. A structural evaluation procedure that incorporates the finite element stress analysis technique has indicated the potential for optimisation of the lemniscate linkage support structure with the aims of achieving weight reduction and lower manufacturing cost for supports which are able to meet the same duty specifications.
