Abstract

According to the analysis of the shear localization in cutting process, a method based on micro-measurement of the chip and used to calculate the serrated chip deformation was proposed. By this method, the shear strain and shear strain rate within the shear bands of the serrated chips of 30CrNi 3MoV steel in high speed machining were investigated. Furthermore, the influence of cutting speed and tempering hardness on the shear strain and shear strain rate was discussed. The calculation results indicate that the shear strain and strain rate increase with the increase of the cutting speed, and the hardness of workpiece is able to influence the chip formation and deformation mechanism evidently.
